Why it matters

You trust a driver with your car and your family.
Who hires a driver
Beating Lagos traffic
Lagos traffic can take hours out of your day. Many families hire a driver so parents can rest, work or make calls on the move.
School runs and errands
Families also hire drivers for school runs, market trips and getting older relatives to appointments safely.
Company drivers
Companies hire drivers to move staff, visitors and documents around the city. Whether it is a family car or a company vehicle, you are trusting the driver with people and property.
What to look for when hiring
- 1
Confirm their identity and licence
Ask for a valid means of identification and a valid driver's licence, and check that the details match.
- 2
Check their guarantors
Speak with the guarantors yourself. They should know the driver well and be willing to stand for them.
- 3
Ask for references
Talk to past employers about punctuality, safe driving and how the driver treated the car and passengers.
- 4
Agree on duties clearly
Agree on working hours, days off, who the driver will carry and how the car should be cared for.
- 5
Take a short test drive
Ride with them before you decide. Notice whether they drive calmly and follow road rules.
